What a treat. This film highlights of course the versatility of Robert Wise, a great underrated American filmmaker.

@ Tony- Thanks for your comments as well. You certainly wrote your own masterpiece on the film that really made me want to check it out. I'm glad I could add a few insights as this film really has great depth to it. Thanks again!Jonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10656287096270976604noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5703076346434344743.post-317218764908107172011-12-04T17:32:26.265-05:002011-12-04T17:32:26.265-05:00Hi Jon. I for one did not pick-up on the relevance of the kids playing shoot-em-up in the opening scenes. You encapsulate the film's story and the underlying ethos with economy and real understanding. The screen caps you have chosen are brilliant!

Thank you for the generous acknowledgement. As a film blogger I can't ask for more than to inspire a reader to investigate a movie I have reviewed.Tony D'Ambrahttp://filmsnoir.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5703076346434344743.post-29175021326384776982011-12-04T10:18:12.094-05:002011-12-04T10:18:12.094-05:00This is a stunning piece on a very great film Jon,...This is a stunning piece on a very great film Jon, one that saw just recently at the Robert Ryan Film Festival at Manhattan's Film Forum. It is certainly as you rightly contend a "fatalistic" piece, as the ending confirms, but it's an astute character study, an expose of racism, and a riveting heist-gone-awry film that makes telling use of every glance, every nuance and timing that could definitively alter everything that happens. Ryan, Bellafonte, Begley, cinematographer Joseph C. Brun and composer John Lewis make major contributions, but as you note Robert Wise has orchestrated what by any barometer of measurement is one of his greatest films in any genre.

This is a master-class piece Jon!

My apologies for getting here late, but I think I finally have everything under control now. Ha! Soon I'll be saying 'welcome back' my friend.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5703076346434344743.post-91132535468136272222011-11-25T14:02:32.690-05:002011-11-25T14:02:32.690-05:00Hey Matt!
