I really enjoyed this film and would totally watch it for the 2nd time !Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5703076346434344743.post-13201738039470731092014-01-06T21:15:55.319-05:002014-01-06T21:15:55.319-05:00Maurizio,

Looking forward to your analysis.Jonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10656287096270976604noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5703076346434344743.post-2587135696654304522014-01-06T19:36:51.024-05:002014-01-06T19:36:51.024-05:00This is playing at my local multiplex (which is on...This is playing at my local multiplex (which is only a stroll away) and I will be going this week to investigate. I've heard many people say that the 3 hours goes by extremely quick.

As for the repeated claim that this is his best film since Goodfellas… I'm of the opinion that only Casino (somewhat) reaches the lofty heights of that film (plus Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King Of Comedy, After Hours, and Mean Streets). Since 1995, its been nothing but disappointments and okay but overrated movies from Scorsese. Will let you and Sam know what I think once viewed…
M. It will likely make my top 10.

@ Samuel - I'm not so sure it's not about Belfort any less than say Raging Bull isn't about Jake LaMotta. It's a microcosm of a certain personality, but the film's wouldn't exist in their approach without the persons. I think the judgement about upward mobility "requiring" anything is where you and I would part on this. I don't think Scorsese is implying any sort of requirement, but reminding us of the lecherous opportunities given to the powerful and talented to take advantage of the situation. I would have a hard time understanding the motivation of Scorsese of showing a film that purports to show the best way of going from rags to riches. If it's true, why would he mock Belfort so? I see what you're saying, but tend to disagree.

Dan- I remained more distanced from the proceedings but found much to laugh at as I felt the film mocked and ridiculed the protagonist. It was remarkably put together. I also found it as you say here "profane and over the top." I would have liked more depth in examining motivation, instead of the almost constant orgy of sex and cocaine. The movie was sometimes hysterically funny, and it was a fast three hours, but it was less disciplined than GOODFELLAS and inferior to that film by way of screenplay. Still I will admit that Di Caprio was electrifying and the film had style to spare. Definitely on my year-end runners-up list but not Top Ten.

Your review? Spectacular stuff Jon! It's not so much about Belfort himself, but the theme we've heard before about upward mobility perhaps requiring a little corruption, that this is the best if not only way to get from rags to riches. After all, Scorsese shows us no other; if anything, he suggests that a drug dealer is more honorable. I don't bring this up to criticize the film, which I enjoyed quite a bit, but to suggest that there's more to "get" here, maybe to contradictory effect, than many accounts suggest.
